Find an Apartment to Let and Enjoy the Great Outdoors!

Most of us love spending time exploring the wonders of the great outdoors and when you find an apartment to let in Sheffield that’s just what you can do. The Ecclesall Woods which are located south west of Sheffield encompass an area of 140 hectares. These woods are the largest of their kind in all of South Yorkshire and are among Sheffield’s most cherished woodlands. Ecclesall Woods are an exceedingly well-liked among its visitors. They are well-known for their historical value, archaeological features, and their abundance of wildlife. They are home to several species of wildlife which are of a major interest to the UK Biodiversity Action Plan.

Ecclesall Woods contains two roads and a large area of footpaths within its boundaries. Some remarkable archaeological features exist here. A prehistoric stone carved with a cup and ring mark was discovered in 1981 that dates back to the late Neolithic or Bronze Age. The famous Ryecroft Stone Bridge is another great feature. Two mills that exist in the woods are Ecclesall Woods Sawmill and Ryecroft Mill. The Ecclesall Woods Sawmill was constructed because of the extensive storm damage which was done to trees in 1962. It is privately owned this working sawmill is also slated to be used as an information centre. The Ryecroft Mill was once used as a lead smelting mill on the Limb Brook and was powered by water. Afterwards it was used for grinding corn. So far the mill has been dated back to the 17th Century. Two hundred Q pits plus and one hundred charcoal hearths were discovered. They were believed to have been kilns used for the manufacturing of white coal. The Charcoal Burner’s Grave located here is the grave of George Yardley. He was a wood collier who perished in the woods when his cabin burned down in October of 1786.

Ecclesall Woods is just one of many interesting and educational outdoor activity areas which exist in Sheffield. Another fascinating outdoor woodland area is Rother Valley Country Park which covers parts of Sheffield, Rotherham, and North east Derbyshire. It includes many varieties of plant life and also features a number of different habitats for many species of animals which live in or roam through the Rother Valley area.
